DHCP service to computers on LNS subnet
As of October 17th, 2001, LNS Computer Services provide Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service to all laptops on our subnet.
To maintain network security and to make the service easier for everybody,
we request first-time users of the DHCP system to register via a special Web
page (see instructions below).
To use the new DHCP service, do the following:
-
Run/setup a DHCP client after connecting a laptop to an active network
drop.
-
Start up Web browser and go to http://www.lns.mit.edu to fill out the
registration form. (On some systems the browser will start automatically
after an initial connection is made.)
-
Restart your computer and run the DHCP client again to check if you've
got 10.77.xxx.xxx IP address with a proper mask etc.
-
You should now have a registered, fully functional network connection
and will not have to register again with the same machine. (The Ethernet
or MAC address of
your network card is stored in our data base, but we do not collect any
other information about your laptop or its contents.)
Short-term visitors can get a network connection even during weekends or
longer holidays. If you are a host of such a visitor, please remember to
register for an LNS
account
and (optionally) for an additional
network drop.
